St. James’ Park Showdown: Can Chelsea Break the Tyneside Curse?
Newcastle United welcome Chelsea to St. James’ Park this Saturday for a high-stakes encounter that could reshape the race for European qualification. The Magpies, despite sitting 12th in the table, boast a formidable home record against the Blues, having won their last four consecutive meetings on Tyneside across all competitions. However, Eddie Howe faces a severe defensive crisis with key figures like Dan Burn, Sven Botman, and Tino Livramento sidelined, forcing a makeshift backline to contend with one of the league's most dangerous attacking units.
.Chelsea enter the fray currently occupying 4th place and looking to solidify their Champions League ambitions under Enzo Maresca. While the Blues have historically struggled in the North East—winning just once at this ground since 2021—they are buoyed by the return of talisman Cole Palmer and the sharp form of Pedro Neto. With Newcastle exhausted from a dramatic midweek Carabao Cup win and Chelsea resting ten of their regular starters, the visitors will look to exploit the hosts' defensive vulnerabilities and end their four-year wait for a victory at the Cathedral on the Hill.

History
The CONCACAF Champions Cup, formerly known as CONCACAF Champions League (2008–2023), is an annual international club competition organized by CONCACAF as its top continental football tournament for clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The champions automatically qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
The tournament currently uses a knockout format; it had a group stage prior to the 2018 edition. Unlike its European and South American counterparts, the winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup does not automatically qualify for the following edition of the tournament.
The title has been won by 30 clubs, 14 of which have won the title more than once. Liga MX from Mexico is the most successful league, with 39 titles in total. The second most successful league is the Liga FPD from Costa Rica, with 6 titles in total. Club América is the most successful club in the competition, winning 7 titles. The most successful non-Mexican club is Deportivo Saprissa, winning 3 titles. The only four teams to successfully defend the title are all Mexican: América, Cruz Azul, Pachuca and Monterrey. The current champions of the competition are Pachuca, who defeated Columbus Crew in the 2024 final.
Each round of competition consists of a two-leg home-and-away series with the winners determined by aggregate goals over both legs. If aggregate goals are equal, the away goals rule is applied. If away goals are also equal, the game goes to an extra time period. If it is still tied, the game is decided through a penalty shoot-out.
Prior to 2018, the tournament had two parts: a group stage held from August to October, and a knockout phase held from March to May of the following year. The group stage consisted of 24 teams playing in eight groups of three teams each, with each team playing the other two teams in its group twice. United States and Mexican sides could not be drawn into the same group. The winners of each of the eight groups advanced to the quarterfinals. Each phase of the knockout rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals, finals) consisted of a two-leg home-and-away series with the winner determined by aggregate goal differential. Seeding in the knockout phase was determined by performance during the group stage.
Prior to the 2012–13 season, the competition had involved four groups of four, with one Mexican team and one U.S. team in each group. A preliminary round was used to reduce the number of teams from 24 to 16.
